The Cross

"And how shall they preach, except they be sent?"  Romans 10:15a

"At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light, and the burden of my sin washed away...".  Paul gloried in the cross of Jesus Christ, for it was by the cross that the world was crucified unto him and him crucified to the world. All Christianity focuses at the cross as the work of redemption, healing, and all benefits of God that we receive are because of the cross of Jesus Christ. For the most part, modern day belief expels the cross as a negative precept of dying to one's self that the life of God may be manifested in the church as the body of Christ. Instead, the cross has been replaced with "easy believe-ism" in order to comfort the appetites of the flesh by preaching a god of mammon. "Send in a thousand dollars and get a hundred fold will get you ten, and ten will get you a hundred." The end result is that we have a "Cross-less Christianity" with the cross being disannulled.

To us that believe, the cross is the power of God enabling Him to work in our lives to conform us to the image of Jesus Christ. The captain of our salvation was made perfect through sufferings, therefore, the body of Christ as the church will be made perfect by the same method. Many deem this idea of sanctification of spirit, soul, and body through mortifying the deeds of the flesh to be foolishness. Those who believe that the cross of Jesus did away with our cross of self denial... that we do not have a cross of our own as Jesus did...that we do not have to deny the flesh which can only be crucified by our cross in order to live a consecrated and dedicated life to bring forth holiness or the divine nature of God in these that deny the cross, it is foolishness to them that perish. For those who are Christ' have crucified the flesh with the affections and the lust.

The cross of Jesus Christ is preached as the Gospel; that is, Christ became perfect (completed His work) through his sufferings in his body of flesh and blood. Therefore, we as His bride will follow the example of our Lord, working out our own salvation with trembling and fear, for it is God working in us both to will and to do by the power of the cross. For it is only by the suffering in our flesh do we cease from sin...for this is the mind of Christ. (1 Peter 4:1). There is an offence of the cross by which we as believers suffer persecution, for the world despises the cross and will have nothing to do with it, except mock it and rail upon it. For we are called as believers not only to believe on Jesus, but to also suffer for His name's sake. Try preaching the cross in this modern day church of mammon.

"Exactly what did happen at the cross?" "Why is the cross so crucial to salvation?" Jesus Christ was born to die for the sin of the world. He was holy, harmless, undefiled and separate from sinners as the spotless Lamb of God. Sin is darkness and God is Light. Therefore at the cross, where all sin of all time gathered as God turned his body of flesh as the Son into sin who knew no sin. If sin is darkness, and all sin gathered at the cross upon Jesus, then we would expect total darkness to be manifested at the cross. Therefore, darkness was upon the earth for three hours, from noon until three in the afternoon while Jesus hung on the cross. The sun did not shine, the stars did not shine, even the light of the candlesticks in the temple of Herod went out in the Sanctuary and would not light again. All sin from past, present, and future was gathered at the cross and placed upon Jesus who knew no sin nor had done anything worthy of death.

Since the life of all flesh is in the blood, and it is the blood that makes for the atonement, Jesus had to shed his life's blood for the atonement of mankind, for all who receive the finished work of Calvary. The blood of bulls and goats under the law of Moses only covered sin for a season and then there was a remembrance again of those things that were held against them. For the blood of bulls and goats could not satisfy the righteous judgment of God in washing away sin. However, when the last drop of holy righteous blood dropped from the spotless Lamb of God's body and fell upon the skull cap of the world being that called Golgotha, when it hit all destroyed it....exploded it as far as the east is from the west... totally expiated and destroyed sin so strongly that the earth quaked, rocks were rent, graves of the righteous saints were opened, and the vail in the temple of Herod was rent from top to bottom. Death had no part of Jesus' blood, for it was righteous blood, holy blood, undefiled blood in which sin had had no hold or weight upon it all the lifetime of Jesus, for He never sinned. Jesus was different from mankind in that, though he was a man just like us as a human being, he never sinned. Therefore, he never carried the weight of sin or the body of sin upon his person. De Facto, He knew no sin.

Jesus' death was not simply a martyr's death but the complete full judgment of God in His wrath poured out upon this man for our redemption being the personal atonement for our sins. He was our Kinsman Redeemer, our propitiation for sin, the ransom for our sin. But he tasted death for every man. In his deaths (plural), Jesus not only drank the cup of suffering in his spirit, soul, and body, but drank the cup to the fullness of the dregs of the wrath of God to the fullness as the penalty to satisfy the holy demands of a just God. Judgment was poured out to the brim of the cup, Jesus suffering the eternal vengeance and wrath of God for our sins. Before he ascended, he first descended and went to hell for the showdown with Satan and his angels. He triumphed over Satan and made a show of him openly taking the keys to death, hell, and the grave. Amen.

The cross is the work of God. It is the power of which the flesh with its affections and lusts as an enemy of God is destroyed. It is by the fellowship with the sufferings of Jesus that we know him and are known of him. It is by the cross of Jesus that we are conformed to the same image coming to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, to be a Christian. Therefore, let us glory in the cross as with Paul...and be found in him...not having our own righteousness as the modern day Pharisees of today which is of their laws and creeds of men thinking that gain is godliness, but the righteousness which is of God by faith....that we may know the true Jesus and the power of His resurrection being made conformable unto Jesus' death through the cross...if by any means that we all might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Praise God...I will glory in the cross of Jesus!
